This bioethicist at Abertay University in Dundee, dr. Kevin Smith, claims that all men should freeze sperm at the age of 18. Why so? He believes that sperm’s quality declines with age. This said, you should freeze your sperm at 18 to reduce the risk of having a disabled child. The older the father the greater the chance of having a child with autism or schizophrenia. Other doctors and professors disagree (and so do I). Professor Pacey said that risks are really small and may only affect men aged over 45. Dr. Smith’s only statement that makes sense to me is that youngsters should freeze sperm only if they know there’s a risk for their sperm’s quality to decline with age. Some of the people thinks this is another April Fool’s Day joke and to be honest, it does sound something similar. Another thing came to my mind – is this a marketing strategy for sperm banks? Are they paying Kevin to try and convince 18 year olds to start freezing their sperm? Yes I know, he said, he called for NHL to offer young men free sperm banking, but still. They say storing your sperm in a freezing facility in a private sperm bank can cost you up to 200 British pounds per year. That is no little money and imagine millions of teenagers rushing to freeze sperm.
Dr. Smith said a public campaign is needed to raise awareness of this problems. He believes that if nothing will be done in this direction, there would be a gradual reduction of the human fitness in the long term. I am no doctor nor professor, but I really don’t buy it. It’s a bunch of baloney.
My believe is, if you are a healthy human being and there is no evidence that your sperm’s quality may decline with age, you do not have to worry. Instead, go buy yourself a freezing cold beverage and enjoy it on this hot, sunny day.
