You read that correct. March, 2016 issue (released in February) of the Playboy magazine will be completely nude-free. After more than sixty years, they decided to fully rebrand and stop posting (on the web and mobile app) and publishing (in the mag) naked Playmates and other gorgeous women. Reason? Money, duh! Oh and another reason, “Times change.”
Once a leading brand in explicit, controversial content, now doing a move that is a brand suicide, according to Kelly Holland, Penthouse’s managing director. Kelly added, “They are exiting my space, so thank you for that, Playboy.” Larry Flynt, founder of Hustler, thinks they are loosing money and it is a sign of desperation. “They take the nudity out and they think they’re going to get more advertisers,” said Larry. Followed by, “But you take the nudity out, you lose the demographic and you can’t get advertisers.” Playboy’s move is a bad business decision in Flynt’s eyes.
Apparently, being non-nude is doing good for Playboy. Their web base is growing already and who knows what will happen when the first “new-age” issue will be released and people over in China and India will go mad for it. In just 2014 China helped generate more than $500 millions in revenue.
However, there will still be a Playmate of the Month and girls will wear next to nothing and pose in provocative postures. “A little more accessible, a little more intimate,” said Cory Jones, chief content officer at Playboy.
Honestly, I never really was a fan of Playboy magazine and its textual content. And there was so little of nudity in it at the time, it wasn’t really making any sense for buying it. Could be that our country’s version of Playboy simply sucks.
Years passed since I last time held a copy in my hands. Back then I only liked to flip through it as quick as possible, take a peek at the ladies and that’s pretty much it. Plus, I believe I bought only two issues. This being said, this “suicidal” move by Playboy will have no affect on me at all.
